Monday night sometime before 9pm it looked like the Seattle Sounders were putting the finishing touches to one of the worst sporting weekends in the history of Seattle Sports. Saturday the Washington Huskies were on the receiving end of a 31-26 beat down from the Stanford Cardinal. See going into the game Huskies had the best defense in the Pac-12. No one until the Cardinal walked into Husky Stadium Saturday afternoon had been able to run on the Huskies. Well, when that Cardinal was done with that their Husky defense 191 rushing yards had been amassed and yes, the Dawgs were left dazed and confused. Go was the Huskies No 23 national ranking and undefeated record.
Things got considerably worse on Sunday when the NFC West Leading Seahawks took yup a pummeling from the 4-7 New York Giants at Lumen Field. Stop me if you have heard this one before. The Seahawks had the No. 3 ranked defense in the NFL. The Giants run defense was ranked No.5 . Yea you already know where this is going. The Giants gashed the Seahawks defense for 190 rushing yards. No miss print partner seems 190 plus was the magic number in beating the Huskies and Seahawks. So, when the dust settled the Seahawks were on the losing end of an inexplicable 17-12 loss to the Giants. Go was the Seahawks lead in the NFC West. That pole position now belongs to the LA Rams.
So back to Mondays Western Conference Final Soccer match between the Seattle Sounders and the Minnesota Loons. No, I do not know what a loons is . Let’s just stay to the script . The MLS defending Sounders found themselves down 1-0 at halftime and it looked like a battle would ensure in the last 45 minutes of the game. The loons scored in the 65th minute to take a 2-0 lead and that battle looked like a straight out war. Well, you know what they say. Never underestimate the heart of defending champion! The Sounders scored three goal in the last 15 minutes to win the game 3-2 and earn a trip to Columbus to play in another Major League Soccer title game. For those of you counting at home that’s four MLS title game appearances in the last five years. The Sounders have two Championship rings in 4 attempts. The comeback by the Sounders was one of the greatest comebacks in MLS history and Sounder folklore.
“ Give credit to the players and the teams. I wish, how I wish the fans where here to witness this great win. This will go down in Sounders history as one of the greatest comebacks of all time. I am proud of the players, the organization and our fans,” Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer said after the game. The Sounders will face the Columbus Crew in Columbus next Saturday for the MLS Title. Tough to bet against the Rave Green .
