Unpacking Purpose

Here’s what D’Vonne Pickett Jr. taught us…

By Chardonnay Beaver

I believe the English language is too premature to express how much D’Vonne Pickett, Jr. meant to our beloved community.

Running a mailing and shipping business known as The Postman, alongside his wife and relatives, D’Vonne service was community-centric. His sincerity, leadership, and integrity were guiding principles he embodied when training his CD Panthers football players.

D’Vonne was a family man, dedicated to furthering the legacy of those who came before him. As a son, husband, father, and brother D’Vonne supported his relatives' dreams becoming reality. By living a purposeful life, D’Vonne brightly beaming his God-given light into our lives.

Unpacking purpose seems appropriate when achieved retrospectively. Because life is lived forward and understood backwards. However, as a journalist, I’ve been tasked to write about history as it’s unfolding. Perhaps this is the same attitude we should have towards unpacking our purpose. Understanding that this life is the dress rehearsal for eternity, we can’t afford to not unpack our God-given purpose.

Author Rick Warren wrote “the greatest tragedy is not death, but life without purpose.”

D'Vonne undeniably fulfilled a great purpose. He taught us critical principles through exhibiting, rather than professing, his genius.

Words of Wisdom by Char of the Week: In memory of D’Vonne Pickett, Jr. here’s a few life principles to remember as you unpack your purpose.

It takes a team to fulfill your dreams. And you’re only as valuable as the player beside you.

Celebrate the brilliance within everybody. Create spaces where their brilliance can flourish.

Identify the positives instead of the negatives. Use your platform to elevate and serve.
