Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way

Learn how being persistent develops our character

By Chardonnay Beaver

One of my absolute favorite statements is the timeless idiom ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way’. This statement embodies the essence behind my persistent nature. The earnest desire to push boundaries, and strive for unboundedness, is often highly regarded.

However, extending beyond the established restraints requires an unwavering commitment to persistence.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, persistence is characterized through one’s insistence, unchangingness, repetitiveness, and stubbornness. Consistency measures the duration in which an action is continued; whereas, persistence evaluates an individual's ability to continue despite challenges and difficulties.

For me, my commitment to persistence often begins with a vision for my life. Those visions, whether grand or simple, ignites a desire that I can't seem to extinguish until fulfilled. That fierce desire cultivates will-power.

If you have a mother like mine, determination (also known as will-power) is instinctual. At my worst, will-power has led me to be confidently wrong and prideful. At my best, will-power is contagious and encourages a greater sense of purpose for those connected to me, both personally and professionally.

Today, I recognize my will-power works best when fueled by faith. Faith makes the impossible possible. By allowing faith to fuel our will-power, we’ll remain persistent. ‘Where there’s a will’, should be rephrased to ‘where there’s faith’. Through faith, the ‘way’ we’re searching for is revealed.

Ultimately, persistence develops a tenacious and resilient spirit that doesn’t quiver at rejection.
