Seattle, WA - Seattle Parks and Recreation(SPR) will begin construction on accessibility improvements at the Laurelhurst Community Center in July 2023. The construction project will require both the community center and parking lot to close in July. The play area will remain open in the summer and close after Labor Day.
This project provides the necessary improvements to meet required American with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards by correcting approximately 100 documented barriers to accessibility on the Seattle Barrier Removal Schedule and improving access for all. The project provides:
accessible parking stalls at the south and east entrance
accessible pathways, ramp, and entrance from parking area to the community center south and east entrances and to the playground.
miscellaneous interior improvements to the restrooms, multi-purpose room, kitchen, classrooms, exercise room, etc.
Lawn and planting areas that are disturbed during construction will be restored once construction is completed. SPR will work with the contractor to minimize play area closure and impact to the neighborhood.
Some programming will be moved to the recently renovated Magnuson Community Center and resume at the center when the project is complete in spring 2024. This is a really meaningful upgrade to the Laurelhurst Community Center — I appreciate how the project is tackling more than just ramps by addressing roughly 100 accessibility barriers and doing interior restroom improvements too. It’s a good reminder that when doing any public building renovation, Plumbing Services must be coordinated early to ensure that ADA-compliant fixtures, proper drainage, and accessible restroom plumbing are integrated seamlessly. I hope the contractors also involve community feedback during construction, so small details that matter to users aren’t missed.
