CELEBRATING THE WONDERFUL LIFE OF KATIE REBECCA BURKS


KATIE REBECCA BURKS October 31, 1923 - January 17, 2021 Katie Rebecca Moreland was born on October 31, 1923 in Birmingham, AL, to the union of Nathaniel and Alice Moreland. She was the 2nd of 7 children. Katie attended Cameron Grade School, Ullman Middle school, and graduated from Parker High School. Her family attended 6th Ave Baptist Church where she participated in Sunday School, BYPU, and sang in the Choir. At the age of 17 she was working in a wood shop when she was recruited to work for Boeing. She along with her older sister and some friends boarded a train to Seattle, WA to begin their jobs. Katie along with her friends found themselves doing some amazing work and didn’t realize they were making history. She was trained to be a mechanic and her job was to get things ready for the riveters. Katie retired after 43 years of service to Boeing. Shortly after arriving in Seattle she was followed to WA by Carl Burks whom she had met in AL. They were married and had one son. They had a wonderful life together and was married for over 50 Years until his death in 1997. Katie joined Peoples Institutional Baptist Church in 1943. She immediately joined the Usher Board where she served faithfully until Covid-19 closed it’s doors. She held various titles over the years most recent were President and Youth Supervisor. In addition to her role as an usher she was a faithful member of the Sunday School, Minister and Deacon Wives, Women’s Ministry, and the Welcome Committee to name a few. She also devoted her time to teaching Ushers and served for 23+ years as the Youth Supervisor and was also a trainer in the School of Ushering for many years. Katie was very active in various conventions both locally and nationally. While on those trips she would always extend them to visit home regularly and travel abroad. She has visited Spain, Italy, France, South America and several other countries. While on those travels Katie loved to shop. She would purchase her outfits with everything matching from head to toe. She was the true definition of a Fashionista. Katie is proceeded in death by her parents, brothers; Clyde, Nathaniel, and Jimmie, sisters; Vivian and Dorothy, her husband Carl, and God-Daughter, Ladonna Fair. She leaves to cherish her memories, son; Mikal Majeed (Brenda), sister; Ruby Daniels, Granddaughters; Lishaun (Timothy) Ingram, Malika Burks, Ayisha Burks, and Bahiyah Majeed. Great-Grandchildren; Kia Pierce, Kenneth McCraney, Tiana Ingram, Kaitlin Ingram, Karl N.J. Ingram, Nylah Tatum, Kaleb Ingram, Naeem Tatum, and Keenan Ingram. Great-Great Grandchildren; Ke’Asiah, Khelanni, and Khyrie. God-Daughter; Myra Stallworth, Sister-in-Love/Law; Louise Slade, a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends. Services were held on Monday, January 25, 2021.
