(August 28, 2024) – The City of Seattle’s Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects has awarded the Bell Street Improvements Project in the Belltown neighborhood as part of the Waterfront Seattle Program to Titan Earthwork for $2.4M. Improvements will be made to Bell St between Elliott Ave and 1st Ave. Construction is planned to begin in January 2025 and will take approximately six months to complete.
“The Bell Street project will create a seamless connection between Belltown and the Seattle Waterfront, improving accessibility and prioritizing pedestrian and bicyclist safety and mobility. Community input has helped shape the final design and the project reflects the neighborhood’s desire for a revitalized Bell St.” said Angela Brady, Director of the Office of the Waterfront and Civic Projects.
The goal of the Bell Street project is to strengthen and enhance connections between Belltown and the waterfront. Our work will include a new two-way protected bike lane, and the addition of a bicycle traffic light at the Bell St and Western Ave intersection. The project will also widen sidewalks and add greenery and seating along Bell St with views of Elliott Bay and the waterfront.
In addition, the project incorporates a historic Alaskan Way Viaduct sign bridge, which will be located at the Bell St and Western Ave intersection. The sign will be illuminated at night and serve as a gateway to the Belltown neighborhood.
The City worked with community members throughout the design process, holding two online open houses and attending multiple Belltown Community Council meetings in 2023 to solicit design preferences. Feedback from the community emphasized the need for improved bicycle facilities, additional greenery and a sense of connection between the Belltown neighborhood and the new Waterfront Park.
