WHY IT MATTERS: June 19, 2026 marks a rare convergence of three nationally significant moments: Juneteenth, the FIFA World Cup in Seattle, and the United States approaching its 250th anniversary. On the same afternoon the U.S. Men's National Team is scheduled to play at Lumen Field, thousands of community members and international visitors will gather ten minutes away at Jimi Hendrix Park to mark the day in 1865 when enslaved Black Americans learned they were free. The festival is rooted in Seattle's historic Central District, the cultural and economic heart of the city's Black community for generations, and represents ten years of community investment by Africatown Community Land Trust in preserving Black culture, preventing displacement, and building Black economic power.
