In Love in Memory of Sherlyn "Shay" Allen

Sherlyn "Shay" Allen, 60, of Tacoma, WA, peacefully passed away on February 11, 2023, surrounded by loved ones, after a difficult battle with acute kidney disease.


Shay was born on September 2, 1962, to Paula J. West and Willie J. Allen in the Emerald City, Seattle, Washington. She grew up in Portland, OR, and made Tacoma home for over 20 years. Shay graduated from Central High School (Independence, OR) in 1980. She earned an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Washington and a Master of Human Resources Management degree from Portland State University. Professionally, she worked in human resources for the City of Portland, State of Oregon, and the City of Seattle. Shay was passionate about advancing race and social justice and loved what she did for a living. For many years, Shay was a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate with the Pierce County Juvenile Court. Shay finished her career in human resources after 30 years in the field. Shay loved laughing, socializing, and spending time with friends in the neighborhood. She also enjoyed spending time with family, especially her nieces and nephews. Shay is survived by her son, Grant Carmichael, mother Paula J. West, four siblings: Steve Lee, Leah Allen, Greg Allen, Malinda Allen, and Lance Richardson, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
