In Loving Memory of Barry Matthew Barnes
Barry Matthew Barnes was born on April 12, 1950, and passed away after a lengthy illness on July 1, 2026
A lifelong Seattle resident, Barry graduated from Garfield High School, attended the University of Washington and Seattle Central Community College. He retired from Boeing after working in the Aerospace industry for several decades. Barry had an entrepreneurial spirit, which started at an early age as he traveled around the city to sell candy. That spirit continued in various endeavors throughout his life.
As a member of the Black Panther Party and later a member of the Nation of Islam, he fought for social justice and freedom for communities of color. This was a fight that never left him, and he felt that being involved in the politics of the day was extremely important for our city and for our nation.
Barry was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Curtis R. Barnes Sr., his mother, Arzelia Barnes, siblings, Curtis R. Barnes Jr., Ralph E. Barnes (Linda Flory-Barnes), and Wilma Jean (Barnes) Turner (Daniel Turner Sr.).
He leaves behind a son, Maihankali Barnes, his close friend and confidant, Sheree Bell, grandchildren, Maiyan Barnes, Mklinnley Barnes, siblings James A.D. Barnes and wife Deborah, Anthony J. Barnes and wife Michelle, Katrina A. Barnes, Royal Alley-Barnes (wife of Curtis Barnes Jr.), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Sugar Bear’s love, joy, and the twinkle in his eyes will be missed but the warm memories will always be with us.
Memorial services and light repast for Barry will be at the Royal Esquire Club, 5016 Rainier Ave South, Seattle, WA 98118 on August 28, 2026, from 3pm - 7pm.
