Doris Marie Hickerson Carter McCoy Cook, or better known as Mom, Mother Doris, Momma Carter, Grandma, Grandmother, and Sister Cook, was born on March 12, 1932, to the marriage of the Reverend Theodore and Susan Hickerson in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Doris was the oldest child of this union. She was called home to be with her parents, sister, brothers, son, and late husbands on December 20, 2025.

Doris is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, Ira Carter McCoy and Emmett J. Cook, sons Ira Leon Carter, Gerald Elliott, daughter in law Anita Elliott, brothers Theodore Hickerson, Jr., and Reverend Dr. Vernon R. Hickerson, Sister Glenda Faye Allen, Stepson Emmett J. Cook, Jr., and mother-in-law, Sarah Davis along with other close friends.

Doris was born and raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and graduated from Manuel Training High School. She went on to attend Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma, before marrying Ira Carter McCoy while at Langston, giving birth to her children, and moving to Wichita, Kansas. The family moved from Wichita, Kansas, to Seattle, Washington, in 1957. In Seattle, she was employed by Providence Hospital, Federal Records Center, and Safeco Insurance before retiring from Safeco at the tender age of 55 in 1987. Doris was a faithful member of Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years; served on the board of the Ardell Mitchell Home, a member and past President of the church Missio,n and devoted football mom of the Central Area Youth Association, and Washington State University Football Teams.

Doris leaves to cherish her memory her devoted and loving sons, Michael Ray Carter of Seattle; Kenneth Wayne Carter (Shelia) of Dallas, Texas; daughter Portia Gaynell Carter of Seattle, Step daughters Barbara Warfield, Sandra Evans, Darlene Alvis and Patricia Cook of Seattle; grandsons Ira M. Davis (Tae)  and Burch M. Carter of Dallas, Texas; Lamont Richardson; Anthony Beeman; Vernon Bell; Jason Bell; Walter Bell, Jr.; Trochan Cook; granddaughters Portina Alexander of Weatherford, Texas; and Demi M. Carter of Greensboro, North Carolina; Samantha Johnson and Tracie Elliott of Seattle; Jenette Alvis;  great granddaughters, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends who loved her deeply and will miss the loving spirit and presence she embodied.

 O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust.

Visitation will convene from 10:00 am untilthe time of the funeral service at 11:00 a,m Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, 126 15th Ave, Seattle, WA  98122. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue, WA.
