In Loving Memory of Joyce Doretha Williams

Joyce Maya Williams Sunrise January 12, 1944- Sunset: October 8, 2025

Joyce Doretha Williams, born January 12, 1944 in Rodessa, Louisiana, transitioned peacefully on October 8, 2025 at age 81. Raised by her grandparents Narvell Johnson and George Rowe, she moved to Seattle to live with her mother and pursue her education. A proud graduate of Garfield High and Seattle University, Joyce broke barriers as one of few Black graduates in 1965. A lifelong member of People’s Institutional Baptist Church, she served as a Sunday school teacher and missionary. She was a passionate NAACP activist, helping rename Empire Way to Martin Luther King Jr. Way through Seattle’s Central District. In 2009, she adopted the middle name “Maya” in honor of poet Maya Angelou. Joyce was a devoted mother to Sherise aka “Niki,” and a nurturing presence to many. She leaves behind three sisters, two brothers, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, countless nieces, nephews, and chosen family.
