SEATTLE – Attorney and Judge Pro Tem Nyjat Rose-Akins announces her candidacy for King County District Court – West Division. With more than sixteen years of legal experience as an Assistant Seattle City Attorney in both the criminal and civil divisions, and as a full-time Judge Pro Tem, Rose-Akins brings extensive courtroom experience and a demonstrated commitment to treating every person who appears before the court with dignity and respect.

Rose-Akins currently serves as a Court Commissioner Pro Tem in King County. In that role, she ensures procedural fairness and legal compliance while addressing urgent behavioral health and public safety concerns. She adjudicates civil protection order matters—including Domestic Violence, Anti-Harassment, Anti-Stalking, and Sexual Assault Protection Orders—and presides over contested Involuntary Treatment Act (ITA) hearings. Her judicial philosophy is grounded in disciplined, impartial decision-making: listen carefully, deliberate thoughtfully, and decide without ego or bias.

“I am an experienced trial attorney and Judge Pro Tem committed to fair, thoughtful, and dignified justice,” said Rose-Akins. “For more than a decade, I served as an Assistant Seattle City Attorney, handling hundreds of cases and making decisions that affect public safety, individual liberty, and community trust. I approach the bench with deep respect for the weight of judicial decision-making and a belief in individualized justice.”

As an Assistant Seattle City Attorney, Rose-Akins served in both the criminal and civil divisions, giving her a comprehensive understanding of how legal decisions impact individuals and the broader community. In the criminal division, she handled hundreds of cases, tried more than 50 jury trials in Seattle Municipal Court, and worked closely with participants in therapeutic courts, including Mental Health Court and Community Court, to address non-violent criminal behavior while promoting accountability and rehabilitation.

In the civil division, she advised and defended the City on a wide range of matters, including police accountability, homelessness, and neighborhood concerns—experience that strengthened her ability to analyze complex legal and policy issues with balance and objectivity.

“My awareness of how a criminal case impacts victims, defendants, families, and the community has deepened through my service on the bench,” Rose-Akins added. “Judicial responsibility requires humility, preparation, and a steadfast commitment to fairness.”
