State Representative Sharon Tomiko Santos proudly represents the diverse communities of the 37th District, from the Central District to Rainier Beach and West Hill/Skyway. She credits these communities for giving her a sense of purpose and passion about Op portunity, Equity, and Justice. As a young student, Santos participated in the CETA Summer Youth Employment program assigned to work at the Central Area Motivation Program Firehouse. While there, she met Larry Gosset and other community leaders who introduced her to ideas of community action, economic empowerment, and self-determination. She continues to embed these principles into her policies and priorities as a legislator. Among her proudest achievements is the return of the former SOIC (and WIATT and SVI) building – now the McKinney Center for Community and Economic Development- to community ownership through the Central District Community Preservation and Development Authority.
