Learn why it may be difficult to finish what you started

By Chardonnay Beaver

The fear of failure or lack of knowledge are reasons for why most individuals don’t begin. Just because we know we should, doesn’t mean we always perform to our fullest.

But, for the sake of this column, let’s focus on the individuals who eagerly start and don’t finish.

As a recovering perfectionist, procrastination has historically kept me from finishing what I started. The anticipation of reapproaching a matter can be daunting, at times.

However, one attitude that grounds me is simply remembering that if I don’t do it, it won’t get done.

One of the major reasons why we don’t finish what we start is due to our approach. Consider a Thanksgiving meal. You have all your side dishes and main dishes on your plate. Your favorite dessert is on the stove cooling off. You’re ready to dig-in and as you begin you get overwhelmed, realizing that your eyes were bigger than your stomach. You end up putting your left overs in to-go tupperware containers to nibble off the very meal you initially sought to enjoy while fresh.

This is an illustration of how most of us approach tasks. We couple all we need to accomplish into one day, striving to be overachievers. Perhaps, this is what causes us to have incomplete tasks and defeated attitudes.

The best approach is to deal with one dish at a time, one task at a time. I believe we’ll never be blessed with more until we manage what we currently have.

Words of Wisdom by Char of The Week: Though this approach is encouraged, I also know that unforeseen events occur. In the end, you’ll have to learn how to let go, and let God.
