Seattle, WA – Africatown Community Land Trust (ACLT) and Community Roots Housing are excited to announce the official opening of Africatown Plaza, a 7-story, 126-unit affordable housing development in the heart of Seattle’s Central District. This milestone continues the effort to empower and preserve the community’s African-American cultural legacy while providing affordable homes for families and individuals earning up to 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI).
Africatown Plaza is now leasing a range of housing options, including studios, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. The development also features a public plaza, 2,000 sq. ft. of office space for ACLT’s headquarters, and 800 sq. ft. of retail space to support local businesses.
To celebrate this significant achievement, ACLT and Community Roots Housing will host a Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on October 5, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Africatown Plaza. The event will feature guided tours of the new facilities, entertainment, and opportunities to learn more about the mission behind the development.
"Africatown Plaza is more than just housing—it’s a cornerstone for preserving the cultural and historical significance of the Central District," said K. Wyking Garrett, President and CEO of Africatown Community Land Trust. "This project ensures that the Black community’s legacy is not only remembered but sustained and empowered for future generations."
“We are honored to collaborate with ACLT to deliver Africatown Plaza to the Central District, providing affordable homes and opportunities for residents to remain connected to the neighborhood’s rich history,” said Christopher Persons, CEO of Community Roots Housing.
