VELMA JEAN COLEMAN, formerly Velma Sykes, was born JULY 9, 1953 to Queen Ola Washington and Johnny Coleman, in Luxora, Arkansas. She was a mother of 2, grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 11. In 1954 she moved to the Central District of Seattle with her siblings, Doris Trahan, Betty Sykes and Tommie Sykes.
In 1987, Ms. Velma married Anthony Minnis, and remained married until her passing.
Ms. Velma embodied the Angela Davis quote, “I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.” She lived it to her last days, transitioning on April 1, 2025 with loved ones by her side.
Services will be April 29, 2025 at Greater Mount Baker Baptist Church. 2425 S Jackson, Seattle WA 98144. Visitation 10 AM. Services 11 AM. Burial: Hillcrest Burial Park in Kent to follow.
