Opening Day in the Cactas League out inPeoria Az just hit different. Soon as you step inside the Peoria Sports Complex you feel it. Blue sky stretched wide. Sun glowing heavy on the grass. Baseball season waking up like a giant out the desert sand.
The Mariners out there loose, swinging the bat like they been waiting all winter to let it fly. Crack of the wood snapping through the air. That sound travel. That sound mean summer coming. Pitchers getting their work in. Infielders breaking in that old mitt, leather popping every time the ball find home. That pop still feel like neighborhood ball, like back when we played till the street lights came on.
They dropped a 10-5 decision to the Gaints of San Fran after leading early, but bounced back big, pounding the Reds 14-8 with a barrage of hits. In their opener they beat the Diego 7-4 with a long ball to jumpstart the offense before a 3-0 loss to the Dodgers showed there’s still work to do.
Spring training is more than reps. It is hunger. Young cats fighting for a roster spot. Veterans locking in, sharpening iron with iron. Fans posted up in sunglasses, soaking up sunshine, cold drink in hand, smiling like hope just signed a one year deal. In Peoria, baseball ain’t just a game. It is a reset. Fresh start energy. New chapter loading.
