Mayor Harrell Statement on Passage of Predatory Homebuying Legislation

ree

Seattle – Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell issued the following statement after the City Council unanimously passed legislation proposed by his administration earlier this year to protect Seattle homeowners from predatory homebuying practices:

“Promoting equitable growth and fighting displacement are top priorities as mayor, and this legislation is a powerful step to safeguard homeowners from deceptive, misleading homebuying tactics. For far too long, these practices have targeted our senior, low-income, and Black and Brown homeowners, pushing them out of their communities and robbing them of opportunities to build generational wealth.

“As the city prepares to update our growth strategy through the One Seattle Comprehensive Plan, we will continue to make progress implementing my Executive Order to strengthen the City’s anti-displacement policies and programs – balancing the need for more housing with tangible supports that keep long-time communities rooted in place.

“With record investments in affordable housing, emergency rental assistance, and a new anti-displacement and reparations housing fund in my proposed budget, we are committed to combating gentrification and building a more affordable, livable, and vibrant city for all neighbors.”
