MLK Day Holiday to Shift Waste Pickup for Parts of Seattle

Some Neighborhoods to Experience One-Day Service Delay

SEATTLE (January 15, 2026) In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, some Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) solid waste customers will be on a one-day delayed collection schedule during the week of Monday, January 19, 2026. This adjustment is due to a Recology–Teamsters labor agreement that recognizes the holiday as a non-service day. Seattle Public Utilities and the City of Seattle support recognition of this holiday and a citywide modification of solid waste collections in the future.

Please note: All SPU Transfer Stations will remain open on Monday, January 19.

Who is Affected:

  • Northeast Seattle (east of I-5, north of ship canal)

  • Central Seattle (north of I-90, south of ship canal)

Customers with collections on Monday will shift to Tuesday, Tuesday customers will shift to Wednesday, and so forth until Saturday.

Customers in these areas should set carts out on their adjusted collection day.
