Seattle Parks and Recreation Reopens Genesee Playfields 1 & 2

ree

Seattle, WA-Seattle Parks and Recreation is excited to announce that Genesee Playfields 1 & 2 opened in July, completed two months ahead of schedule for the turf replacement projects! Playfield 2 (the upper field) originally reopened in March with new synthetic turf, and the new pathways were finished in July. Both fields are now open and available for public use. The contractor will finalize punch list items following Seafair.

“This project is a great example of how we’re delivering on our promise to maintain and improve parks across Seattle,” said AP Diaz, Superintendent of Seattle Parks and Recreation. “By reopening these fields ahead of schedule, we’re getting families, teams, and community members back onto high-quality playfields even sooner and that’s a big win for everyone.”

The Genesee Fields project included the removal of the old ‘worn out’ synthetic turf and replacement with new state-of-the-art synthetic turf and addressed structural repairs to curbing, sub-subsurface and drainage. SPR continues to lead the way in developing and installing synthetic turf fields by investing in a state-of-the-art synthetic turf system that is safe, playable, durable, and retains less heat in the summer. Our standard is to provide a sustainable cork and sand infill over a cushioned pad system. Additionally, this project will install three Teqball tables/court areas that will be open for play in spring 2026. Teqball is a sport played on a curved table, combining elements of football(soccer) and table tennis.

The project began in September 2024 when Coast to Coast Turf mobilized at the site, beginning work on Playfield 2 with Playfield 1 scheduled for later phases. Funding was secured through the Seattle Park District Cycle 2, reflecting the City’s investment in safe, year-round athletic facilities.

SPR thanks the community for their patience during construction and looks forward to seeing players, families, and neighbors out enjoying the renovated fields.
