Writing Your Story: Discovering the Characters Within Us

Tacoma LitFest Workshop — March 14

Join author Noni Ervin for a 60-minute, all-ages writing workshop exploring how our experiences, imagination, culture, and values shape the characters within our stories.

Everyone carries a powerful story. In this interactive, all-ages workshop, Noni Ervin invites participants to explore how our lived experiences, imagination, culture, and values shape compelling characters — and how those characters help us tell our own stories to the world.

While the workshop is family-friendly and welcoming to all generations, each participant will engage in individual reflection and creative exercises designed to uncover their unique voice. Together, we will:

  • Explore the foundations of strong character development

  • Identify personal traits, experiences, and influences that shape story characters

  • Learn how everyday moments can become meaningful narrative material

  • Create a character rooted in individual identity and perspective

  • Develop a short “story seed” that can grow into a larger work

Participants will leave with practical tools for developing authentic characters and the confidence to continue writing and sharing their stories beyond the festival.

This workshop affirms that storytelling is not reserved for a select few — it belongs to all of us.
