The State of Africatown 2026: From Harm to Repair: Rebuilding a Blackand Thriving Central District

Seattle, WA — State of Africatown 2026 is a critical gathering for

community members and civic leaders committed to ending Black

displacement in Seattle’s Central District and advancing meaningful

repair.

This year’s keynote speaker, Bernadette Atuahene, nationally respected

scholar and author of "Plundered: How Racist Policies Undermine Black

Homeownership in America", will outline how policy-driven displacement

harmed Black communities and what real repair requires today. Her work

has shaped national conversations on housing injustice, property

rights, and restorative policy.

Attendees will also hear from K. Wyking Garrett, President and CEO of

Africatown Community Land Trust; Hon. Dawn Mason; King County

Executive Girmay Zahilay; Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson; and Seattle City

Council President Joy Hollingsworth on strategies to ensure Black

communities thrive as part of Seattle’s future.

Langston and the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.
